Get involved in the community

LEEF is a movement that addresses the social needs in our immediate and nearby communities.
We address needs based on the principle of Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD).

This approach identifies the value, skills, points of contact and potential in a community. It emphasises the balance between addressing needs and developing human assets and natural resources within a community. Individuals, institutions and companies are then mobilised for this task.
How do we do it?

From time to time, LEEF offers workshops in and around the community to identify these assets and resources, and anyone is welcome to attend the workshops. We keep a database of those who have attended the workshops, and when projects are launched, those individuals become the hands and feet of the projects.

Projects can be initiated either by LEEF or by people from the community; and if you have a suggestion, we invite you to contact us at for more information. We look forward to hearing from you!
LEEF is a group of enthusiastic volunteers with a calling, vision and mission to make a positive difference in the community. The Executive Committee consists of ...

LEEF Leader
I am a Pretorian inside out… except for the three years I pursued further studies in Cape Town, but I moved back soon after all my hair got blown away by the wind! I married a country girl Jonellda Pienaar, and two children sprang up. Over the years, I have focused on studying a few disciplines: theology, psychology, education, management and media studies ...

As an integrated person, I therefore approach life not from a single point of view, but a diversity of schools of thought. I’m not a spectator… wherever I go I try to make an impact, I try to change things for the better, and I try to make life a better place for my fellow man. Results are what I focus on, and I detest any purposeless sitting around or wasting of time during meetings!

For the past 24 years, I’ve been very active as a father and husband and in management positions at Radio Pulpit, as well as being a tentmaker minister at Pierre van Ryneveld Geloofsfamilie. Making music, either alone or in a group, is my passion. Piano is my main instrument, but I try hard to keep in practice on my violin, double bass and some other musical instruments. I love socialising and particularly enjoy spending time with family and friends!

Then I also really love to eat! Sweets I cannot resist, and anything with cheese on it is a feast! But our friendship won’t last if you give me beetroot, tripe or red wine!
Lizel Ferreira (Admin)
I love the simple things in life; thus a beautiful flower garden, long walks on the beach, best friends and beautiful music rather than gold and silver. Animals, children and the elderly have a real soft spot in my heart!
I have a wonderful husband, and we have two beautiful, mature children who I am very proud of.
After 19 years of teaching in KwaZulu-Natal, I now really enjoy making a difference with LEEF in our community.
Deon Nel
From Namibia's south
Were my first sounds
The red Kalahari sand
Still makes my heart beat fast

In Pretoria I came to work and “to church”

And before I knew it, I noticed a woman
Hiking, camping and cycling
My innermost joy

Coaching and consulting
Daily broadening my horizons
Giving noise to my wallet
Money for the wife and kids to blow

My eyes in front of the computer and books
Constantly I look
For new truth and wisdom
In humanity

In God's Spirit living on earth
I’m trying to show my own life
I can grow a little more every day
The more I wrestle with Him and as He cares for me
Amanda Smit
Born in the Eastern Cape; I made a turn in Namibia and Cape Town. I graduated in Stellenbosch and ended up in Pretoria, where I started working. I also met Koos in Pretoria, I’ve been married for 35 years, I’m a mother of two children (with two more), and I’m the grandmother of the most beautiful four grandchildren whom I love dearly.

I had a wonderful career as an officer in the Navy; and, after that, my path led to my own congregation where I started working in 2006 and was able to start living out my passion, the place where my Lord led me to make a difference in people’s lives.

I also have the privilege of having a relationship with Jesus. People and caring for people are what warm my heart. People all have basic needs to keep them going, and that's why I live out the following towards people: Live Simply! Love generously! Speak kindly! Care deeply!
Johannes Erasmus
I am a father of two sons, and we love nature and the ocean. I like to be creative, to think outside the box and to build things, which is also why I really enjoy my job.

I became involved with LEEF because I feel and believe that it is our Heavenly Father’s will that we should live for each other, and I think that LEEF can make a great contribution to our congregation and community in the way we help each other.
Christa Janse van Rensburg
Being the only blonde team member, I often hear some pencil jokes, and I actually always try to keep things light. Even though not everyone finds blonde humour funny, I believe one should be able to laugh at oneself every now and then! I love challenges and embarking on new adventures. My bucket list for adventures and places I want to see has been written for up to my third generation... to me exploring my own country is like Forest Gump’s box of chocolates: You never know what you're going to get.

Favourite places that I’ve been to include the Kgalagadi, Kruger, Etosha, Mapungubwe and, overseas, Croatia and Mauritius. I love our scenery, camping and cooking on an open fire. And it’s not surprising given that I proudly bear the names Johanna Christina.

Am I scared of anything? Yes, many things, but I’ll never say so. I'm a proper Jack(y) of all trades and master of none. I’ve done things like measuring mine failures and helping to plan a nuclear power reactor. I’ll do whatever needs to be done, even if it’s digging holes. Currently, except for little ad hoc jobs, my real job is that of a life coach.

I have one husband and two beautiful daughters with amazing talents, one of which is singing. I love music, and I sometimes pluck the guitar strings around a campfire for those who want to listen. I also have a Kalahari self-rescue classified as a Pharoah Hound, which I had to lure out of the Kalahari dunes over four days. It has an incredible personality. It’s a long story for another day’s visit when we look each other in the eye and share our stories.

Except for Jesus, my favourite character in the Bible is John the Baptist. It’s probably the vibe of honey and locusts in the desert. I think he was the perfect example of what a Christian and a follower of Jesus’ attitude should be.
He was so humble when he had to baptise Jesus, empty of himself, not worthy to baptise Jesus but obedient to do the will of God. To me the most beautiful example of leadership – a trailblazer through the desert for Jesus. Jesus was always his focus. Definitely worth following! John’s authenticity or “authenticity” stands out to me and is a beautiful and important quality that I like to spot in others as well.

Unknown author: “Authenticity requires vulnerability, transparency and integrity.”

At LEEF, together with the team of pathfinders, I would also like to live out this calling of serviceability. May we cross paths.

"... If you can’t be the poet, be the poem ..." – David Karradine
Alex Flemming
I grew up in the Northern Cape, Warrenton, and studied architecture in Bloemfontein, where I met my wife, Teresa. We have been married for five years, and we’ve been in Pretoria for seven years. I enjoy nature, hunting, flyfishing, golf and kayaking. In all these things I find rest in God. I really enjoy exploring all aspects of design and seeing how God’s hand is in everything ...

I enjoy my profession, creating and building spaces to enhance our world and people's lives. I also like working with my hands, especially working with leather. God has given us so many blessings and materials; and if we use them in the right way, it brings us closer to Him and honours Him. I love God triune so much.

I surrendered my life to Jesus at a young age. For as long as I can remember, I have loved the Lord, but over the past few years I have come to know Him better and have come to feel that I want to serve Him more and more in everything I do while serving and helping others. That is why I joined LIFE, because the most important purpose of man is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him into eternity.
